Scorching SunBelt

Ga St, Ga Southern, and ULM are tied at 13-5 with two conference games left.

Ga St Panthers are  @ULM on Mar 5 and  @  GSU in the final regular season gave Mar 7.

Ryan Harrow is the  Panthers’ star and has enough talent to take them to the regular season title.

Hewitt has been steady for G-Southern but his efforts were not enough tp prevent a loss to 4th place ULL last night

ULM had a bad loss last night to App St last night, and I don’t know where they’ll find the scoring.

So toss a coin , or settle for a tie cuz  a Georgia school will hold or share  this years SunBelt crown

MAC & Sunbelt one ticket each

Ok, I’m behind the curve on these two conferences but I’ll offer  some snippets for later criticism

Western Michigan will return to the Dance  led by David Brown 19 PPG. Akron & Toldeo are my dark horses.

week 6, best game poll

Marshall Herd  should  eventually ride away from ODU. Cato and Devan Johnson will prevail in a battle at ODU .Monarchs QB Heinicke will keep them in the game for three quarters.

NIU survives the Kent St flashes in a home nailbiter

Passing Pete Thomas will lead the Warhawks in a shootout W @ and over Ark St

Another 2 out of 3 week:   Correct on: Marshall 56 ODU 14 , NIU 17 Kent 14

Wrong about Ark St 28 ULM 14:  It was their Knighten to McKissic connection, not Thomas of  ULM

Sept 27 quick hits, poll

I picked USTA as my CUSA darkhorse, but I’m leaning toward FAU as the season progresses. I’m going with FAU in a  home nail-biter  W over USTA . Keep your eyes on the QBs Passing:  USTA-Carter – 44-72, 400 yds, 1 td.   FAU Johnson – 35-60, 478 yds, 4 td

Another Glass Bowl MAC game:   The passing of  CMU’s QB Rush – 62-102, 706 yds, 4 tds will be enough  for a W @Toledo

SunBelt:  Troy U will not recover from the UGA drubbing to win at ULM led by the passing of Thomas – 63-115, 650 yds, 2 ts

Sept 28 Post game review:

2 out  of 3 ain’t bad: ULM edged Troy thanks to it’s D creating turnovers amd Manton, thier kicker.. FAUQB Johnson tossed the winning TD with  20 seconds remaining   for the W. Toledo  QB  Woodside was the difference and gave me my wrong  selection in the Rockets 42-28 W. Staying in the MAC, how about Akron’d holding Pitt (ACC) to 10 points in a W.

Mid majors week 10 starts Thursday

Thursday games in the SunBelt and CUSA, and the MAC has a short slate, but I’m going with Rice/NTex option. Rice is average 234 rushing yards a game, and NTex is an improving program. Updates through the weekend. It’s Kent St (not Toledo)/Akron. The ZipFlash special.

Nov 1 : NTex D did some scoring in a big conference win (28-16) that knocked Rice out of first in the West. Tulane can gain ground with a win at FAU , a team reeling from Carl Pelini’s resignation :

Earlier this week Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini, Bo’s brother, and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis both resigned from their positions over what the school called “illegal drug use.”

Brian Wright is the interim HC.  Jaquez Johnson rushed for 114 yards and 2TDs in a stunning  FAU  win over Tulane which keeps the West wide open with a 3-way tie (Tulane, Rice, NTex). ECU & Marshall , the East leaders, won easily over , respectively, USM & FIU.  UTSA  defeated Tulsa and MTSU  edged UAB in  what turned out to be the must-see game of the week. UTEP hung with TAMU for a quarter in an OOC loss

Kolton Browning threw for 354 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a score  in ULM‘s 49-37 road win at Troy.  Ark St was a close second in the must-see contest edging S.Bama, and WKU thumped Ga St in other conference games.  TX St and ULL   earned easy OOC wins over, respectively Idaho and N.Mex St

Akron beat Kent St and Toledo slammed E.Mich, but Lynch  and NIU  rolled over UMass and are on a path to bust the BCS again.
Passing: J. Lynch (NIU) – 160 YDS, 1 TD
Rushing: J. Lynch (NIU) – 17 CAR, 119 YDS, 4 TD

Mid majors sneak peek for week 7

CUSA- Tulane face ECU in a battle of division leaders. Will Nick Montana help the Green Wave ascend?

MAC-  Buffalo’s high flying offnese catches my interest as they battle a weak W. Mich squad. Alex Neutz, Buffalo’s star WR, has 32 receptions for 518 yards and five TDs

Sunbelt: Only three games scheduled so I’ll pick ULM/UTSA as the game to watch.

The CUSA game I voted for was quite a barnburner, but it was Tulane defensive TD and 6 FGs from Santos that saved the day in 1a 36-33 win. Devin Powell (23-39-224-1) did a solid job replacing Montana who was a late scratch as the Wave were spared OT by a missed ECU FG with three seconds to go. ECU’s loss  allowed Marshall who edged FAU to   stand alone atop  CUSA East. Rice beat UTSA to stay even with Tulane in the West. UAB edged FIU, Tulsa beat UTEP , and NTex walloped MTSU.

Neutz only had two receptions for nine yards, but one was for a TD as Joe Licata of Buffalo found other targets in  their 33-0 shutout of W.Mich.  Bowling Green took it to Miss ST (SEC) but came up one point short. Army ‘s (Independent) 50-25 win over EMI may be the final straw in in Ron English  abysmal tenure there. Back to conference play: C.Mich upset Ohio while UMass, NIU,  & Ball St won close games over respectively,  Miami of Ohio, Akron, & Kent St.

Corey Robinson late passing TD for Troy spoiled GA St best game of the season for 35-28 win. ULM scored 2 DTD to outlast TX St. Ark St smashed the Vandals of Idaho(Independent) in an OOC game.

A side note on G ST. They’re in a transitional status this season and not bowl eligible. They play conference games but  don’t build a conference record.

Mid majors week 6 is on

Is Bobby Petrino’s Hilltoppers O in gear? Doughty threw for 370 yards  and 2 TDs in the WKU win over ULM. Troy nipped  the ascending USA Jaguars.  Eric Thomas caught a 20-yard  winning touchdown pass for Troy and became the Sun Belt Conference all-time leader in touchdown receptions (26).  ULL Cajuns raged over TX St.  In OOC play GA St was swept up by the Crimson Tide.

How about Ball St led by Keith Wenning rolling  (48-27) over Virginia  from the ACC. In conference play the Ohio Bobcats scored 43 turned on the D holding Akron  to a FG. Buffalo’s  offense continued to soar with Brandon Oliver’s 150 yards rushing helping them to break the 40-point mark in back-to-back contests for the first time since 1981 and snapped a five-game losing streak against the E.Mich Eagles. Also in the 40+ points club Toledo beat W.Mich 47-21.  Bowling Green beat UMass , NIU beat Toledo, & Central Mich beat Miami of Ohio.

Skip’s coaching  stocks  falls  as rebuilding UTEP  edged La Tech. USM woes continue as they couldn’t hold off FIU.  Kato’s Kids (Marshall) got back on the winning track beating UTSA. & FAU beat UAB in easy wins. ECU won a hard fought game over MTSU.

Rice &  Tulane won close games over respectively Tulsa & NTex and are tied for the CUSAW lead. Nick Montana & Tulane remain one of the surprise CUSA stories this season.
